John McLay Presents at IPECC/SOPECC Conference
Posted on July 17th, 2014
From June 17-21, 2014, John McLay, President of JMC Consulting Ltd and a First Class Power Engineer, attended the IPECC/SOPECC conference held in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. He participated with the IPECC committees in reviewing the 4th to the 1st Class Power Engineering syllabi and curricula. He shares his thoughts on this event and the importance of these types of conferences to the Power Engineering community:
I take my hat off to the people who attend this event as many of them return year after year. The working sessions start at breakfast, or 7:30 AM, and- for all three days- many continued well past 5:30 PM, reflecting the persistent pace needed to cover the agenda before them. It was a positive experience to see industry, educators and the Provincial Authorized Inspectors (Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety) working as a harmonized unit for the guidance and advancement of the Power Engineering field.
A complex system of checks and balances, reviews for changes made in the IPECC events are then passed as recommendations to the SOPECC committee and then finally to the AIC (Authorized Inspectors Committee) for review, acceptance and implementation. While these organizations are not exclusively comprised of Institute of Power Engineers Society members, the IPE is well represented, on these committees, and paving their own way in the industry.
For the first time, the IPE National Annual General Meeting was held following the IPECC and SOPECC events, with all attendees agreeing to the very positive concept. I anticipate this will be done in the future. For the IPE event, I was honoured to present two 45 minute presentations, the first being, “STO Transition Points, Worker Efficiency and Contractor Momentum,” and the second being the “Operations Responsibility to the Turnaround,” and both were well received.
I look forward to attending and presenting at the NIPE Annual General Meeting again next year.
